CARE QUALITY COMMISSION

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) replaced the Healthcare Commission, the Mental Health Act Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection in the UK from April 2009. The CQC is the regulator for the quality of care in general healthcare, mental healthcare and adult social services.

This change requires action from many healthcare providers. You need to demonstrate that the care you provide meets the standards of the new regulator - with policies and audits in place to satisfy ‘due diligence’ requirements.

The CQC is able to close dirty wards or issue penalty fines of up to £50,000 on hospitals that fail hygiene standards, and can remove the registration of poorly-performing care homes.
