The 2006 Health Act (UK)
The 2006 Health Act places increased responsibility on anyone with responsibility for healthcare provision. The Act and the associated Code of Practice set out increased scrutiny of procedures and practices, and also individual responsibility. To meet their obligations under the Act, all managers involved in healthcare have to do make sure that, amongst other responsibilities, they do all these things:
- Assess the risks of infection in their area
- Put in place preventive measures
- Measure and monitor
- Put right any deficiencies
- We use audits to assess current knowledge and skills, and progress throughout training
- We train staff so that know what to do – and more importantly, they actually do it
- We give you a documented record of the progress and improvement
- We help you ensure that the policy in the filing cupboard is the way that people actually work.
This means that when the time comes for inspection, you won’t be found wanting.
