Why we use paper workbooks
DC Solutions use a system which is tried and tested - individual workbooks. These combine the information to be delivered with a series of exercises, all set out in an easy-to-read format. The books have informal illustrations alongside the text, to make them easy to work through. The correct way to do something is clearly laid out and explained - and then the employee has a chance to check their understanding immediately afterwards, by answering the questions. You can download an extract from a typical workbook here (around 600kb).
This is a great way to learn - people can work at their own pace, making sure they have absorbed the material. And associating the exercises directly with the relevant section really helps it to sink in!
The workbooks can be tailored to the particular working practices of an organisation. (And find out how we deliver our training in infection control)
You might be surprised to find we use workbooks, in the age of the computer – but there are good reasons why we do:
- Books are familiar and easy to use for everyone. They’re portable, and can be used in any environment. A spare quarter of an hour can immediately be turned into a training session.
- The workbook builds into a permanent portfolio of their work for everyone taking the course. This makes it a great reference tool in the future – it can be easily dipped into once the employee is back doing their normal job, if they just need to check that they are doing things correctly.
- Not everyone is familiar with computers – so a computer-based learning scheme can have a built-in barrier for some people. And we want everyone to be able to benefit from our training – whatever their past experience.
- The use of illustrations alongside text means the books accommodate a wide range of literacy skills.
And above all, people tell us they like them!
